Tasting Notes

Our 2018 Orchestral Pinot Noir reflects the cool climate and well-drained soils of Lone Oak Vineyard as well as the unique complexity brought on by multiple clones. Aromatics of vibrant red fruit and bright cherry are followed by hints of mint and sage. In the mouth, layers of fruit continue with flavors of ripe cherry, boysenberry and spiced tea that mingle with notes of earthiness and forest floor. The structured and delicately layered palate provides a round, soft mouthfeel with bright acidity, silky tannins and a long gentle and slightly drying finish.

"Limpid ruby-red. Vibrant, spice-accented scents of red berries, cherry and spicecake are complemented by a building floral overtone. Juicy and expansive in the mouth, offering energetic raspberry, bitter and floral pastille flavors that deepen and turn sweeter on the back half. In an energetic style, with smooth tannins framing an impressively long, spicy finish that leaves a candied rose note behind." - J.R.

Grown in Lone Oak Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, Orchestral is one of Hahn Family Wines’ most complex Pinot Noirs. It started as an experiment by Nicky Hahn and Winemaker Paul Clifton, who wanted to create a true Burgundian expression of Pinot Noir. In 2013 a five-acre block of Lone Oak Vineyard was inter-planted to 19 different Pinot Noir vines in the Burgundian style, where it’s believed the mingling of clonal material throughout the growing, fermentation and aging stages leads to more complex wines. Field blends like this are rare in California.
