2017 Hahn SLH Orchestral

93 pts - Vinous, May 2022
"Limpid ruby-red. Displays ripe red fruit, blood orange, floral and baking spice aromas that pick up suggestions of smoky minerals and vanilla with air. Appealingly sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering kirsch, raspberry and spicecake flavors that stretch out and deepen with air. Smooth tannins add shape to a very long, smoky finish that strongly echoes the cherry and spice notes. 33% new French oak." - J.R.
In Burgundy, many, if not all vineyard blocks are inter-planted to multiple clones as mingling of clonal material throughout the growing, fermentation and aging stages produces wines of unmatched character and depth. To carry on this “old world” tradition, within Lone Oak vineyard is a 5-acre block, planted to a “field blend” of Pinot Noir clones. Years ago, as many as 20 clones were grafted in random fashion, and the grapes grow, are harvested, ferment and age together. Orchestral Block now produces our most exclusive, complex Pinot Noir. Only 180 cases made.
Our 2017 Orchestral Pinot Noir reflects the cool climate and well-drained soils of Lone Oak Vineyard as well as the unique complexity brought on by multiple clones.
